Since the NBA free agency market opened on July 1, there has been a flurry of signings. More than a month after it opened, most of the bigs and semi-bigs have finalized deals with their teams.
However, not every player has found a home for next season. P.J. Washington is the most prominent of the remaining unsigned players, along with Christian Wood and Kelly Oubre Jr.
The 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft, Washington is a forward who can play both inside and outside. Washington, who has been given plenty of opportunities with the team since his rookie season, averaged 15.7 points last season, the highest mark of his career. His role grew as the team experienced a number of departures due to injury.
However, after becoming a restricted free agent (RFA) at the end of the season, Washington has been slow to sign. His original team, Charlotte, remains the favorite to land him, but the team’s situation doesn’t bode well for Washington’s negotiations.
With the second overall pick in this year’s draft, Charlotte selected Brandon Miller instead of guard Scott Henderson. That leaves them with a solid prospect at the forward position. Add to that the fact that Miles Bridges, who has been in the news for domestic violence, will be back next season, and there’s no rush to re-sign him with Washington.
Boone reports, “Contract negotiations between P.J. Washington and the Charlotte Hornets have been at an impasse as of late. No real progress has been made in reaching an agreement and neither side is ready to give in to the other,” Boone reported on the tug-of-war.
Early in the market open, reports surfaced that Washington wanted a salary of $18 million or more, but that’s an unlikely scenario at this point. Many teams have tight salary cap space, so a sign-and-trade is not out of the question.메이저사이트
