The Tour Championship, the final U.S. Professional Golf (PGA) Tour playoffs event, is a “dream event” reserved for the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings, starting Sept. 24 at Eastlake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
After playing in four consecutive Tour Championships from 2019 to last year as a rookie, Im Sung-jae (25-photo) will be the first South Korean to make a fifth appearance. Choi Kyung-joo (53) has played four times (2007, 2008, 2010, 2011).
The final gateway to the Tour Championship is the BMW Championship, the second round of the FedExCup Playoffs at Olympia Fields Golf Course in Illinois, USA, starting on July 17.
Lim was No. 32 in the FedExCup standings before the first round of the playoffs began. He moved up to No. 28 with a tie for sixth at the St. Jude Championship, the first round of the playoffs that ended on Thursday.
At the BMW Championship, it’s not just about staying in the top 30, it’s about advancing as far as possible. That’s because the Tour Championship awards bonus strokes based on standings leading up to the BMW Championship. First place starts at 10 under par. Second through fifth get 8-5 under par. Sixth through 10th start at 4 under par. Lim, who started 10th at last year’s Tour Championship, finished with a final total of 20-under-par 264, one shot behind Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland). The runner-up prize money was worth $5.75 million (approximately 7.7 billion won).
Heading into the BMW Championship, Lim was ranked No. 12 in the PGA Tour’s power rankings of tournament favorites. This is the highest ranking for a South Korean player. Kim Si-woo, Kim Joo-hyung, and Ahn Byung-hoon are also competing in the BMW Championship. Kim Si-woo, ranked 17th in the FedExCup, and Kim Joo-hyung, ranked 18th, are favorites to make the Tour Championship. The 38th-ranked Ahn will need to climb at least eight spots to qualify for the Tour Championship for the first time in his career.먹튀검증
