The NBA is introducing an ‘invitational’ tournament that will give fans a first taste of the big man, but also the step-up Curry.
Tomorrow (Saturday, April 4) at 9 a.m., the NBA’s new in-season tournament will tip off for the 2023-24 season. The Golden State Warriors, led by Steph Curry and Chris Paul, will travel to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first game of the tournament.
The in-season tournament features 15 teams from each conference, divided into three groups of five teams, playing four games per club. The Eastern and Western Conferences will be split into six groups, with the winners of each group plus the remaining teams with the best record in their respective conferences advancing to the quarterfinals.
All games except the finals will count toward the regular season standings, and with a tournament trophy and prize money on the line, the competition is expected to be fierce. Golden State and Oklahoma City will compete in Group C in the West against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs.
The two teams’ core players are distinctly different. Golden State features veterans like Curry, Paul, and Klay Thompson, while Oklahoma City is anchored by young players like Shay Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Josh Giddy.
Curry (31 points per game) and Holmgren (15.8 points per game) are the two players to watch in this matchup.
The best three-point shooter in NBA history, Curry has averaged 12.2 three-point attempts per game this season, making 5.6 for a 45.9% success rate. For Oklahoma City, it will be important for Holmgren, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, to step up this season. With the expected absence of Shay Gillespie-Alexander, Holmgren’s imposing 6-foot-9 frame will be needed to attack Golden State’s veteran big men, including Kevon Looney and Dario Saric. 보스토토
