Gangwon FC can’t seem to get out of its winless streak.
Kangwon, led by Yoon Jeong-hwan, drew 1-1 against Jeju United in the 25th round of the Hana OneQ K League 1 2023 at Jeju World Cup Stadium on June 6. This extends Gangwon’s winless streak to 15 matches (7 draws and 8 losses).
Gangwon lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation. After playing with only two central midfielders all season, the team deployed three central midfielders – Min-Seok-woo, Hankyoung, and Lee Seung-won. It looked like they made a change during the break. The change worked. Despite being out-shot (6 to 14) and out-possessed (35.2 to 64.8), Gangwon created more threatening chances.
However, the team’s finishing, which has been an issue all season, was once again a problem. In the fourth minute of the second half, Lee Seung-won’s cross from Kim Dae-won’s pass hit the keeper and trickled backwards, creating a chance for Lee Min-woo. There was no interference from the defense, but Shin Min-woo’s shot hit the side netting. In the 27th minute, Kim Dae-won found himself one-on-one with the keeper in the box, but his shot was saved by the keeper. The inability to capitalize on both of these chances proved fatal. It was also unfortunate that Wellington Junior’s goal in the ninth minute of the second half was ruled offside.
Fortunately, Gangwon took the lead in the 38th minute of the second half when Kim Jin-ho received a long pass from the back, and Park Sang-hyuk sent a cross from the left side of the box into the back of the net with a left-footed shot. Until the three minutes of second-half stoppage time, Gangwon was able to hold off Jeju’s attacks.
However, Gangwon was unable to hold on in the final two minutes. In the third minute of second-half stoppage time, Jeju played the ball into the box, and Kim Jin-ho kicked Hayes in the leg from behind as he tried to clear the ball, conceding a penalty kick. The penalty was converted by Hayes himself, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.안전놀이터
Kim Jin-ho’s foul was unfortunate, but it was also unfortunate that two defenders were distracted by one attacker in a contested aerial ball situation. In the end, Gangwon’s other problem, a lack of defensive concentration when in the lead, turned three points into one. Gangwon will need to resolve their chronic problems of goal decision-making and lack of defensive concentration as soon as possible to get out of the bottom of the table.
