When will the ‘golden news’ begin?
The 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games will open on the 23rd. It will be the first Asian Games in five years to be held beyond the COVID-19 pandemic since the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games. The Games will kick off with the gold medal race on the 24th, the day after the opening ceremony.
The Taeguk Warriors’ gold medal parade will also begin on the 24th. The “golden days” for the Korean team to win gold are evenly distributed throughout the Games, and gold news could come as early as the 24th. The Korean team has a maximum target of 50 gold medals.
The first events to be recognized on the 24th are modern pentathlon and taekwondo. The finals of both events will take place on the morning of the 24th. Kim Se-hee, Kim Sun-woo, Sung Seung-min, and Jang Ha-eun will compete in the women’s individual and team pentathlon. Kang Wan-jin and Cha Ye-eun will compete in the taekwondo poomsae men’s and women’s individual events.
The golden generation of Korean swimming could also make golden waves early. Top star Hwang Sun-woo will battle China’s Fan Zhan-li in the men’s 100-meter freestyle on Thursday. Other finals include judo and the women’s epee team event.
On the 25th, Korean fencer Koo Bon-gil will attempt to win his fourth consecutive Asian Games individual title in the men’s sabre. In taekwondo, men’s taekwondo pillar Jang Joon will be aiming for the top spot in the 58kg category, while the mixed team final will be held on the same day. The men’s swimming team will go for gold and a new Korean record in the 800-meter freestyle relay.
The Taegeuk Warriors are also expected to bring home gold in judo, swimming, fencing and taekwondo on the 26th and 27th. On the 28th, the fencing men’s sabre team event will take place, and on the 29th, the final of the esports League of Legends will be held. On the first of next month, the final rounds of the men’s and women’s golf individual and team competitions will be held. Lim Sung-jae, Kim Si-woo, Kim Min-sol, and Yoo Hyun-jo will be in action. Woo Sang-hyuk of the men’s high jump will compete in the final on Oct. 4. The archery teams will aim for the golden bull’s-eye in the men’s and women’s team finals on Oct. 6.
On October 7, a day before the Games close, the finals of the major ball games – baseball, soccer and volleyball – will follow. Ahn Se-young, who has made the leap to ‘badminton queen’, will also be looking for a golden smash in the singles event.
The Korean team officially moved into the Athletes’ Village in Hangzhou on Nov. 21. The Taegeuk Warriors, who are gathering one after another for the finals, will begin the competition in earnest after acclimatization.
