Al Ahly defeated Al Nasr 2-1 at home in the first round of the Saudi Pro League for the 2023-2024 season at Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.
Al-Nasr has recently gained global recognition as the team of “superstar” Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined the club late last year, but he was not present for the match.
He was rested after playing three Arab Club Champions Cup matches in a week, from July 7-13, and leaving the field in pain after a collision with a player in the final against Al Hilal.
Filling Ronaldo’s void was another world-class striker, Mane.
A Senegalese international who joined from German soccer giants Bayern Munich, Mane had a taste for goals from his debut.
Starting up front, Mane rattled the net just four minutes into the game, slotting home a cross from the right flank with his right foot.
However, Alnasr conceded back-to-back goals in the second and eighth minutes through Robin Quayson and Mousa Dembele.
It was a victory for Steven Gerrard on his official debut at Etihad Park.
Gerrard, who played for Liverpool for 17 years during his playing career, took over as Aston Villa manager in 2021 before stepping down in October last year due to poor results.
He took over the reins at Allianz Park last month.
The match also marked the Saudi League debut of midfielder Jordan Henderson, who succeeded Gerrard as Liverpool captain.
Henderson, who made 492 official appearances in a Liverpool shirt, also moved to Al Etihad last month.
